The arrival at this viewpoint is considered as the nail of the show concerning Colca Canyon. Its name, “the condor cross”, came from the incredible density of condor colonies who are nesting in the surrounding ledges and getting closer to the cliff during their flight – and so close to visitors; and from the presence of a massive cross near the viewpoint. The diving view on the 1200 m depth, the river in the bottom, the peaks that are emerging and the surrounding volcanos (the Misti shadow is overhanging all the environs) make the observation of the condor flights more impressive. It is in the morning that it is more likely to see condors: the sun is getting warmer, heating up the rock, and those majestic birds take their flight and start to hover above this dreamlike landscape.
